Saunders Upset over Sponsorships during Sportscasts

Dusty Saunders has a bone to pick with Gary Miller and other sportscasters who are forced to plug sponsorships in the middle of their color commentary:

KCNC-4’s Gary Miller and The Mtn.’s James Bates share a burden also carried by dozens of sports broadcasting professionals across the country.

They have to be commercial pitchmen during play-by-play coverage.

Early in Thursday night’s Broncos-Vikings game, Miller noted that local Chevy dealers were bringing the introduction of Denver’s offensive unit to viewers. Then Miller gave a quick positive pitch about the dealers.

Bates’ uncomfortable contributions included several plugs for Re/Max real estate.

Yes, I’m a purist. But I’m not naive.

  1. This is sort of hard to complain about because it’s capitalism at work and every sports broadcast does it now whether local or national. I just impose my own personal boycott of sponsors that I find to be irritating or too invasive and, as for everybody else, to each his own.

    BTW…great blog! I am really enjoying it! Keep up the great work!

    • Thanks so much for the kind words KoHoSo! I too am able to tune out sponsorships. Perhaps it’s because I’m more used to them now, but sponsorships like that don’t bother me that much. It’s a sportscast, and the expectations of neutrality are exponentially lower than, say, Jim Benemman plugging a sponsor in the middle of a newscast.
